Take a finished product apart

A returned lamp can give you its shade and its fittings again. A disassembly is a production order in reverse: it takes the finished product out of stock and puts its parts back.

  1. Open Production → Manufacturing.
  2. Click Disassemble. With Multi-level assembly on, it sits in the menu More ways to create beside Plan production.
  3. Choose the Product. It needs an active bill of materials, because that says what comes back.
  4. Enter the Quantity to disassemble.
  5. Choose the Production location and where the product is consumed from (Source — consume from). Choose Result — recover to for where the parts are booked. It defaults to the source.
  6. Optionally add Disassembly operations: the teardown’s labor or material cost, as hours times a rate from a position, a contractor or a rate you type.
  7. Click Disassemble.

Both locations must allow production. The defaults for source and result are set in Warehouse → Locations → Defaults, and both must be in the same location group.

The order is created and completed in one step. The product leaves the source, and each material in its bill of materials comes back to the result location in the proportion the bill of materials states.

  • The recovered materials come back at their current average cost. Nothing is invented: adding quantity at the average leaves the average where it was.
  • Assembly labor is not credited back. Only the materials return to stock.
  • The disassembly’s own operations are tracked as a separate cost and are not credited to the product’s cost.
