Add a product

A new product starts as a draft with a name and a base unit. Everything else, from photos to prices to channels, is added on its card.

  1. Open Catalog → Products.
  2. Click Add product. Pressing ⌘K and choosing Add product does the same.
  3. Type the Name.
  4. Pick a Brand and a Category if you know them. Both can be changed later.
  5. Choose the Product type: Sellable, Service, POSM, Tester or Merchandise.
  6. Choose the Base unit. This is the unit the product is counted, moved and costed in, and the drawer will not save without one.
  7. Leave Track inventory on if you keep stock of it. A service never tracks inventory.
  8. Click Create product.

The product ID and SKU are made for you. If you picked a brand, the brand’s SKU rule is used. See Set up SKU rules and codebooks.

If Track inventory is on, switch on Opening stock in the same drawer. Enter the Quantity, the Unit cost if you know it, the As-of date and the Location. All later stock is counted from this balance.

The quantity is added on top of whatever the location already holds. It does not replace it. If you leave the unit cost blank, the quantity is booked at the product’s current average cost.

A product with stock on hand cannot become a service until you write the quantity off. A product listed on a sales channel cannot become a service until you remove it from its channels, because services are not exported.

  1. In Catalog → Products, tick one product.
  2. Click Duplicate. The copy opens as a new draft.

Duplicate appears only when exactly one product is selected.
