Families and variants
A family is one product, called the model, that comes in several variants: a candle in three scents and two sizes. The model holds what is shared, such as the description. Each variant has its own SKU, price, stock and photos.
Make a family
Section titled “Make a family”You start from a plain product and add variants inside its card.
- Open the product and go to Variants & prices.
- Click Add variants.
- Under Differentiating attributes, pick up to three attributes that vary, such as color and size.
- For each attribute, type the values and press Enter after each one. For a color you can also add a name next to it.
- Check the Preview. A variant is created for every combination, and combinations that already exist are skipped.
- Click Add variants.
The product you started from becomes part of the family. Under each attribute you can type its own value in the Current product’s … field. This is optional.
Only attributes marked Can be a variant axis are offered. To mark one, open Settings → Attributes, edit the attribute and switch on Can be a variant axis. See Attributes and what each category asks for.
New variants get their SKU from your brand’s SKU rule. If a value has no code in the rule’s codebook yet, the dialog says so; add the code first. See Set up SKU rules and codebooks.
Fix a family with no axis
Section titled “Fix a family with no axis”If the Variants tab says This model has no variant axis, every row is identified only by its SKU. Choose the attributes that tell the variants apart and click Set the variant axis. The values are already on the products, so nothing is rewritten.
What the model owns and what a variant owns
Section titled “What the model owns and what a variant owns”On a family, the card has a scope strip at the top: Model / all variants, or one variant.
- The title and description belong to the model. A variant inherits them. To give one variant its own words, choose it and click Override for this variant. Use the model’s copy hands it back.
- Attribute values saved on the model reach every variant that does not keep its own value. The axis values always stay per variant.
- Photos belong to the model. On the model’s Media tab you tick which variants each photo applies to. See Attach photos to products and channels.
Work on single variants
Section titled “Work on single variants”In the row menu of Variants & prices you can:
- Set live or Set draft.
- Duplicate variant.
- Move up or Move down to change the order.
- Detach into standalone to take a variant out of the family, or Attach to model… to put a standalone product in.
- Archive variant.
Tick several rows to apply Set price, Set name, Set live, Set draft, Print labels, Detach or Archive to all of them.
