Check shipping cost and margin before you sell
The shipping calculator answers a question you meet before you sell to a new market: if a customer buys this basket and it ships there, what is left? It is a saved question, not an order. It moves no stock, buys nothing at a carrier and writes nothing to your books.
Run a calculation
Section titled “Run a calculation”- Open Sales → Shipping calculator and click New calculation. You need access to logistics.
- Under What it is worked out from, name it, choose the Currency and the Revenue from price list. Choose a Sold on channel to take its commission and its default price list.
- Set Target margin, %, Returns reserve, % (held back from every sale for returns and damage), Payment fee, % and Payment fee, fixed (once per basket).
- Under Baskets, click Add basket, then Add products and set a quantity for each.
- Under Routes, click Add route. Choose where the goods Leave from and the destination country, postal code, region and city. A postal code is checked against the country’s own shape.
- For each route, choose Price from: a connected carrier gives a live price, or use your own Rate table (from Delivery methods and zones). You can narrow a rate table to one Delivery method, and name a Box or leave it Automatic.
- Click Run now.
If a product has no weight, the calculator estimates it from Density, kg per liter. The result says whether weight came from the products or was estimated.
Read the result
Section titled “Read the result”Every basket and route pair shows the Revenue, the Shipping, the parcels and box chosen, and then the way down to What is left:
Revenue → Cost of goods → Packaging → Shipping → Commission → Payment fees → Returns reserve → What is left, with the Margin.
It also shows Most one customer may cost to acquire, at {target}% margin: what you can spend on advertising for that customer and still hit your target. If even a free customer would miss the target, it says The target margin is out of reach even with no cost to acquire a customer.
Each price says where it came from: Live quote, Rate table or Not priced. A pair that could not be priced says why: no zone covers the destination, no rate fits the weight, the parcel has no weight, and so on. The Check badge marks a pair with something to look at.
Each run is kept with its date, and What moved since the last run shows what changed. A calculation you edited after its last run is marked Changed since this run.
Cost and commission figures are hidden from people who do not have access to them. For them, what is left is hidden too.
