Customs codes and categories

Categories classify your products. They also carry the customs code: set the HS code once on a category and every product in it uses it, unless you set a different one on the product.

  1. Open Settings → Categories.
  2. Click Add category.
  3. Type the Category name. The Slug is a lowercase code such as soy-candles.
  4. Pick a Parent category, or leave it as Top level. The tree goes three levels deep at most.
  5. Enter the HS code if you know it. It is optional. Leave it empty to inherit from the parent.
  6. Set the Position. Lower numbers appear earlier in the same level.
  7. Under Name in other languages, add how the name reads for visitors of a store in another language. A language you leave empty shows the name above.
  8. Click save.

To load many categories at once, use Import from file on the same screen. The columns are code (required), name, parent (the parent’s code), hs_code, sort_order and is_active. A row whose code already exists updates that category.

To restructure, tick categories and use Move, Set order, Deactivate or Archive. Deactivate hides a category without deleting it. Keelvy skips a move that would go past three levels or make a loop, and tells you which.

On a product, open Logistics and look under Customs. The HS code field shows the inherited code in gray, as “code — from category …”. The code comes from the first category up the parent chain that has one. To use another code for this product, type it in. For a variant, the Logistics tab grid has an HS code column; clear a cell, or use Reset HS code on a selection, to go back to the category’s code.

Country of origin sits next to it. Enter a two-letter code such as UA.

For a mirror, the HS code and country of origin come from the source product and cannot be edited on the mirror.

  • Label templates can print it. See Barcodes, QR codes and labels.
  • The UPS and FedEx connections send it with each shipment line, as the commodity code.
