Decide what a channel does when a product is out of stock

When stock reaches zero, each channel can keep selling, show the product as out of stock, hide it, offer it as a preorder, or stop syncing it. You choose at four levels.

  • Keep selling (stock can go negative)
  • Show as out of stock
  • Hide the listing
  • Offer as preorder
  • Stop syncing this product: the channel keeps whatever it last read.

The most specific one that has an opinion wins, in this order:

  1. The channel’s Default out-of-stock behavior (Sales → Channels, edit the channel). It outranks the listing, so a marketplace that must never show a sold-out row stays that way.
  2. The listing’s Out-of-stock behavior (product → Channels tab → Edit listing details).
  3. The family’s default, on the family’s card.
  4. The workspace default, When out of stock, under Settings → General. It cannot be left unset.

A single product has no setting of its own. It takes its family’s.

Each screen shows Currently: the effective behavior and where it came from, and each level can be left on Not set — inherit.

Keep selling needs a warehouse that allows it

Section titled “Keep selling needs a warehouse that allows it”

Keep selling only works if the warehouse the channel ships from allows negative stock. If it does not, the listing is shown as out of stock instead, and the screen says so. This is how a workshop can sell what it can still make, while a consignment shop cannot.

A product hidden by its policy while out of stock, or set to Stop syncing this product, is left out of a product feed or price list, and the report lists it as Hidden or Frozen. A policy a feed cannot express leaves the product out as Stock policy not expressible.
