Remove duplicate photos

The same shot uploaded three times, once from the photographer and twice by the team. Duplicates finds them, keeps the best one, and moves everything that used the others onto it.

  1. In Media, open the whole library, a folder, or select some files. Then click Duplicates.
  2. Under What counts as a duplicate, choose Identical files, or Identical and very similar. For similar photos, set How alike two photos must be: Strict matches a resized or re-compressed copy, and Loose also matches slightly different frames of one shot, so look at each group before you remove.
  3. Read the groups. Each shows the photos with the name each was uploaded under, its size, and where it is used. The photo that stays says why: used in more places, higher resolution, a larger file, sharper, more filled in, or the oldest.
  4. Click Compare to see all the copies side by side. Drag to move them together, scroll to zoom, use the arrow keys to switch and K to keep one.
  5. To keep another photo, click Keep this one instead. If a group is not really a duplicate, click Not duplicates.
  6. Click Confirm on each group you want to clean up.
  7. Click Remove duplicates in … confirmed groups.

Only the groups you confirm are touched. The kept photo gets the information of the others merged into it, and the places that used a removed photo move to the kept one. The others go to the Archive; they are not deleted.

After a merge, click Undo. Each place goes back onto the photo it came from and the duplicates return from the Archive. A place that changed since is left as it is. A photo you deleted from the Archive for good cannot be brought back, and Keelvy says so.

Recent merges lists earlier merges, each with Undo.

If there are too many photos to compare by look, only identical files are shown. Narrow the search to a folder. Photos still being prepared are not compared yet; check again in a few minutes.
